Where are you from?
Most startups taking part in the weXelerate Accelerator Program are not from Vienna or Austria, but from all over the world. For this program the startups come to the capital of Austria, to work, to learn and to network. In the current batch we welcomed startups from 17 different countries. This is the reason why it is important for us to not only to network with them and let them mingle with the corporates and each other. We also want them to get an insight into the Austrian culture and introduce them to national cuisine and traditions.
Time is money.
This statement is true for all businesses, but startups think in different scales time-wise and 4 months is too long a time for them to stay away from home and their business headquarter. Therefore, we hold monthly block weeks in the batches. For one week every month during the program all startups come together at the weXelerate headquarter in Vienna to further their business cases, to take part in trainings and meet with mentors and corporate partners. But socializing is also an important part in these block weeks.
Socialising is key.
There are many ways people can get together and socialize. We at weXelerate try to show the startups traditional Austrian lifestyle. In this year’s November block week startups socialized in an Austrian tavern for “Ganslessen”, a traditional goose roast. The story behind it: St. Martin’s Day is on November 11th and the feast is traditionally celebrated around this date. There is a legend that the public wanted to appoint St. Martin as bishop, but he preferred a simple way of living and did not want to take this huge responsibility upon him. He hid in a stable for geese, but the birds were chattering so loudly that he was found and appointed bishop against his will in the end. Today we honor St. Martin with this celebration and traditionally eat „Gansl“.
In December startups, alumni from former Accelerator batches, mentors and of course weXelerate employees have enjoyed a glass of Glühwein, which is best translated into mulled wine, roasted chestnuts, roasted almonds and such delicious pre-Christmas sweets on a traditional “Christkindlmarkt”. Besides food and drink you can stroll around small booths enjoying the pre-Christmas atmosphere and have a look at as well as purchase handcrafted candles, jewelry and Christmas decorations.
Startups and weXelerate employees alike enjoy spending time together. In previous batches social events included a cozy evening in a traditional wine tavern, called “Heuriger” in German. In such a location you sit either inside or outside, depending on the weather. As most of these taverns are situated in hilly areas, you might enjoy the scenery while having a good glass of wine. Food there varies from small snacks or sweet dishes to more course menues.
For those of you who prefer to mix business and pleasure, our monthly “Inspire&Dine” sessions might be interesting. There is a short talk or presentation on one particular topic, followed by questions, mingling and networking as well as snacking with pizza, pretzel and beer.
